Chimneys need to have a clear passage to allow the smoke to flow freely and easily away from your home. Regular sweeping will remove any blockages such as soot, birds’ nest, cobwebs and any other blockages. It also removes creosote which will help to prevent chimney fires.
The frequency depends on what type of fuel you are using, type of appliance and the duration of use. Our chimney sweep can advise you during your appointment.
The sweeping frequencies listed below are for guidance purposes only:
- Smokeless fuel: At least once a year
- Wood: Quarterly when in use
- Bituminous coal: Quarterly when in use
- Oil: Once a year
- Gas: Once a year
We need a 2m clearance around the appliance to allow enough room for the sweep to be able to work. We ask that no fires are lit within a 24-hour period prior to our visit. Any valuables that you may have near also need to be removed. While the sweep is attending it is recommended for safety reasons that children and pets are kept away from the area the sweep will be working in.
